In a new proposal, the Public Administration Reform Commission has suggested setting up a ‍‍`Capital City Government‍‍` in Dhaka, much like the one that governs New Delhi in India.

The idea is to manage Dhaka‍‍`s large population and extensive services under a federal government-controlled structure.

According to the Commission, this new government setup could include an elected legislature and local government, just like other provinces in the country.

The suggested area for this ‍‍`Capital City Government‍‍` would include not only Dhaka but also nearby regions like Tongi, Keraniganj, Savar, and Narayanganj.

The news was shared with the public on Wednesday, February 5, by Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the Deputy Press Secretary of the Chief Advisor.

He held a press briefing in front of the State Guest House Jamuna at around 2:00 pm.

The Commission has also proposed breaking up the four existing divisions into four separate provinces and reducing the number of ministries and departments.

The recommendation includes having 25 ministries and 44 departments in total.

In the same session, the Public Administration and Judiciary Reform Commission submitted its report to Interim Government Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

This is part of a larger effort to implement reforms, following the Cabinet Division‍‍`s announcements in October of last year, which included the establishment of several other reform commissions covering issues such as the Constitution, the electoral system, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and police reforms.

These reports were submitted earlier this year, with two more reports being presented today.

This proposal for a Capital City Government is a bold step towards reshaping how Dhaka is governed.

It will be interesting to see if this idea gains traction and leads to meaningful changes in the capital‍‍`s management.
